The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville ( Latin Archidioecesis Ludovicopolitana , English Archdiocese of Louisville ) is in the United States located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Louisville , Kentucky .

history

Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville

The Archdiocese of Louisville was established on April 8, 1808 by Pope Pius VII with the Apostolic Constitution Ex debito from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Baltimore as Bardstown . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Baltimore as a suffragan . The Diocese of Bardstown gave on June 19, 1821 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Cincinnati . Further assignments took place on May 6, 1834 to found the Diocese of Vincennes and on July 28, 1837 to found the Diocese of Nashville .

On February 13, 1841, the Bardstown Diocese was renamed the Louisville Diocese . The Diocese of Louisville gave on July 29, 1853 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Covington . Another assignment of territory took place on December 9, 1937 to establish the Diocese of Owensboro .

On December 10, 1937, the Diocese of Louisville was by Pope Pius XI. elevated to an archbishopric with the Apostolic Constitution Quo christifidelium . The Archdiocese of Louisville gave on January 14, 1988 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Lexington .
