Thomas Cajetan Kelly

Thomas Cajetan Kelly OP (born July 14, 1931 in Rochester , New York , † December 14, 2011 in Jefferson County , Kentucky ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Louisville .

Life

Thomas C. Kelly joined in 1951 the Congregation of the Dominicans at and studied at the Seminary of St. Rose Priory, Springfield , Kentucky , and St. Joseph's Priory, Somerset , Ohio . He was ordained a priest on June 5, 1958 . After a licentiate in theology at the Study House of the Order in Washington, DC in 1958, he received his doctorate in canon law in 1962 at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) . He completed postgraduate studies at the University of Vienna and University of Cambridge . In 1962 he became secretary of his order's office in St. Joseph Province in New York City. In 1965 he took over the secretariat, also the archive, of the Apostolic Delegation in Washington. In 1971 Kelly became Associate Secretary General of the United States Bishops' Conference and the United States Catholic Conference (USCC); from 1977 Secretary General in Washington, DC.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 12, 1977 titular bishop of Tusuros and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Washington . The Archbishop of Cincinnati , Joseph Louis Bernardin , ordained him on August 15 of the same year; Co- consecrators were James Steven Rausch , Bishop of Phoenix , and Eugene Antonio Marino SSJ , Auxiliary Bishop in Washington . He was named Archbishop of Louisville by Pope John Paul II on December 28, 1981, and was installed in office on February 18 of the next year. He was instrumental in planning the first two papal visits to the United States. Kelly was a member of numerous organizations and commissions. He was awarded several honorary doctorates .

On June 12, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.
