Thomas Joseph McDonough (born December 5, 1911 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † August 4, 1998 ) was Archbishop of Louisville .

Life

Thomas Joseph McDonough received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on May 26, 1938 through Auxiliary Bishop Hugh Louis Lamb .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on March 10, 1947 titular bishop of Thenae and auxiliary bishop in Saint Augustine . At the time he was the youngest bishop in the United States . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Philadelphia, Denis Joseph Cardinal Dougherty , on April 30 of the same year; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Charleston , Emmet Michael Walsh , and Joseph Carroll McCormick , Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia.

On January 2, 1957, Pope Pius XII appointed him. to the auxiliary bishop in Savannah . The inauguration took place on February 20 of the same year. On February 23, 1960 Pope John XXIII appointed him . to the Bishop of Savannah; he was inducted into office on April 27 of the same year.

As a council father, he took part in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

Pope Paul VI appointed him Archbishop of Louisville on February 25, 1967 ; the inauguration followed on May 2nd.

Pope John Paul II accepted his early resignation on September 29, 1981.
