Joseph Carroll McCormick

Joseph Carroll McCormick (born December 15, 1907 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † November 2, 1996 in Scranton , Pennsylvania) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman. McCormick was most recently Bishop of Scranton .

Life

Joseph McCormick graduated from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook . He then went to Rome , where he studied at the Pontifical Roman Seminary for the Priesthood. On July 10, 1932, he was from his uncle, Pope Benedict XV. created Cardinal Denis Joseph Dougherty , ordained priest in Rome .

In 1936 he returned to the United States, where he worked until 1944, first as Vice Chancellor and later as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia . In 1944 he became chaplain of St. Stephen's Church in Philadelphia.

On January 11, 1947, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia and titular bishop of Ruspae . He was consecrated again by his uncle, Cardinal Dougherty, on April 23, 1947. Co- consecrators were Hugh Louis Lamb , auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia, and Eugene Joseph McGuinness , coadjutor bishop of Oklahoma City and Tulsa .

On June 25, 1960, McCormick was appointed by Pope John XXIII. appointed Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown . The enthronement took place on September 21, 1960. In this capacity he also took place at the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . During his tenure, McCormick took over the supervision of a number of church facilities, including the construction of an old people's home and kindergarten.

After six years at the helm of Altoona-Johnstown, McCormick was elected by Pope Paul VI on March 4, 1966 . appointed Bishop of Scranton. McCormick was to lead this diocese for almost 17 years. His resignation was granted on February 15, 1983 by Pope John Paul II .

After that, he was able to enjoy a 13-year retirement. He died in November 1996, at the age of 88.
