The Diocese of Scranton ( Latin Dioecesis Scrantonensis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States with its seat in Scranton, Pennsylvania .
history
Pope Pius IX established the diocese and the simultaneously founded bishoprics of Harrisburg and Wilmington on March 3, 1868 from cessions of territory of the diocese of Philadelphia . The Diocese of Scranton has been a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia since 1875 . Episcopal Church is St. Peter's Cathedral in Scranton .
In 2005, the diocese paid compensation of US $ 450,000 to a sexually abused youth, thereby protecting the prelate Carlos Urrutigoity from criminal conviction.
