The Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh ( lat. : Dioecesis Pittsburgensis ) is in the United States located Roman Catholic diocese , based in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania .
history
The diocese was founded on August 11, 1843 by Pope Gregory XVI. established from cessions of territory by the diocese of Philadelphia .
On July 29, 1853, the diocese gave parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Erie . Another cession took place on January 11, 1876 to found the Diocese of Allegheny . The Diocese of Allegheny was dissolved on July 1, 1889 and the territory was annexed to the Diocese of Pittsburgh. On May 30, 1901, the Diocese of Pittsburgh gave the areas of Bedford County , Blair County , Cambria County , Huntingdon County and Somerset County to establish the Diocese of Altoona . Another assignment of territory took place on March 10, 1951 to found the Greensburg diocese .
In the summer of 2018, former Bishop Donald Wuerl was criticized before the competent jury for his handling of sexual abuse in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. On August 16, 2018, the Archdiocese of Washington removed the Wuerl Report website , which it had set up to protect Wuerl against allegations of abuse in Pennsylvania , following public criticism.
The diocese is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia as a suffragan .
