Anthony Joseph Cardinal Bevilacqua (born June 17, 1923 in New York City , New York , USA , † January 31, 2012 in Wynnewood , Pennsylvania ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Philadelphia .

Life

Anthony Joseph Bevilacqua came from an Italian immigrant family with eleven children. He attended a church school in Brooklyn and during that time won numerous prizes and awards for excellence. In 1943 he entered the Seminary of New York in Huntington and studied there Catholic theology and philosophy . In 1949 he received the sacrament of ordination through the Bishop of Brooklyn , Thomas Edmund Molloy . From 1949 to 1953 he served as a vicar in two parishes and as a teacher at Cathedral High School . He then completed postgraduate studies in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , which he in 1956 with a summa cum laude rated Promotion for Dr. iur. can. completed. He then worked at the Brooklyn Diocesan Court while studying political science at Columbia University .

He became Vice Chancellor of the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1965, and in 1971 he founded the Catholic Bureau for Emigrants and Refugees. 1975 Bevilacqua was in Queens in addition to the doctor in the Department of Civil Law doctorate, he obtained the license to practice law for the states of New York and Pennsylvania , as well as the Supreme Court of the United States . In 1976 he was appointed Cancellarius Curiae of the Brooklyn Diocese. Pope Paul VI awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness that same year . From 1977 to 1980 he also held a lectureship in immigration law at St. John's University .

On October 4, 1980, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Aquae Albae in Byzacena and Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Brooklyn by Pope John Paul II . He received his episcopal ordination from the Bishop of Brooklyn, Francis J. Mugavero on November 24, 1980; Co- consecrators were John Joseph Snyder , Bishop of Saint Augustine , Florida, and Charles Richard Mulrooney , Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn.

On October 10, 1983, he was appointed head of the Diocese of Pittsburgh , the inauguration took place on December 12 of the same year. He was named Archbishop of Philadelphia by Pope John Paul II on December 8, 1987, and was installed in office on February 11 of the following year. He reformed the administrative structures and paid special attention to vital communication between the parish priests and the diocese leadership. He appeared in public on many occasions to get into conversation with people. He made particular contributions to the Judeo-Christian dialogue.

Since 1991 he has been a cardinal priest with the titular church Santissimo Redentore e Sant'Alfonso in Via Merulana of the College of Cardinals . On July 15, 2003, John Paul II accepted his retirement from the office of Archbishop of Philadelphia. Until his successor, Justin Francis Rigali , took office on October 7th of the same year, Bevilacqua headed the Archdiocese as Apostolic Administrator .

Bevilacqua has chaired and served on numerous boards and committees of the United States Bishops' Conference. In 1988 he became Apostolic Assessor of Legatus , an international organization of Catholic leaders. In 2000 he was elected chairman of The Papal Foundation , a US foundation in support of the Holy See. He was Honorary Chairman and a member of the Board of Directors of the Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land .

At the conclave in 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II. He did not participate because he had already exceeded at this time the age of 80 years.
