Berlin International Film Festival 2003
The 53rd Berlin International Film Festival 2003 took place from 6 February until 16th February 2003 instead.
The festival opened glamorously with the musical Chicago . However, the film ran out of competition in the competition. For the first time, the Berlinale promoted young international filmmakers. The newly established Berlinale Talent Campus became a permanent institution over the next few years. Panel discussions and workshops took place here. Campus talents presented their films in the official program of the Berlinale for the next few years.
Competition section
In the program of the official competition, the following films were judged by the international jury:
International jury
The jury president of this Berlinale was the Canadian director Atom Egoyan . Under his leadership, the following jury members selected the winners: Humbert Balsan ( France ), Kathryn Bigelow ( USA ), Anna Galiena ( Italy ), Martina Gedeck ( Germany ), Geoffrey Gilmore (USA), Abderrahmane Sissako ( Mauritania ).

- Golden Bear for Michael Winterbottom's film In This World

Silver bears in the following categories:
- Grand Jury Prize: Spike Jonze for the film adaptation.
- Best director: Patrice Chéreau for his brother
- Best Actress: To the three leading actresses in The Hours, Nicole Kidman , Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep
- Best Actor: Sam Rockwell in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
- For an outstanding artistic achievement: Li Yang as screenwriter and director of the film Blinder Schacht
- Best score: Majoly , Serge Fiori and Mamadou Diabaté for the Senegalese film Madame Brouette
Other prices:
- The Blue Angel for the best European film in the competition went to Wolfgang Becker for Good Bye, Lenin!
- Zhang Yimou received the Alfred Bauer Prize in memory of the founder of the festival for directing Hero .
- FIPRESCI (Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique) - the independent film award of the international film critics and film journalists association for the best film in the competition got lights .
Panorama section
The following outstanding films were shown in the program of the Panorama 2003 section:
- Submissive - Director: Igor Zaritzk
- Broken Wings - director: Nir Bergman - received the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the Prize of the Association of International Art Cinemas as well as the Audience Prize
- Yossi & Jagger - Director: Eytan Fox
- Flower & Garnett - Director: Keith Behrman
- Owning Mahowny - Director: Richard Kwietniowski (with Philip Seymour Hoffman in the lead role)
- Wolfsburg - Director: Christian Petzold received the FIPRESCI Prize
- Pure - Directed by Gillies MacKinnon
- A thousand clouds of peace besiege the sky, love, you will never cease to be love - director: Julián Hernández - received the " Teddy Award ".
Honorary Golden Bear
The French actress Anouk Aimée received the Honorary Golden Bear for his life's work .
Children's film festival
The following films were awarded at the Children's Film Festival:

Retrospective
This year's retrospective was dedicated to the work of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau .
