Edward Harrison Norton (born August 18, 1969 in Boston ) is an American actor and director .

Life

Norton was born in Boston but grew up in Columbia, Maryland . He is the oldest of three siblings. His father, Edward Mower Norton, Jr., was a lawyer and worked as such for former President Jimmy Carter , among others . During the 1980s, Edward Mower Norton, Jr. held a senior position in the Wilderness Society . According to Edward Norton, his father motivated him to work for the environment. In his family, environmental protection has always been an important issue. He worked for the Grand Canyon Park Service at a young age , and his sister studied international environmental policy. Edward Norton's participation in the New York City Marathon 2009, in which he competed with Maasai warriors, caused a sensation. They managed to raise $ 750,000 for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust . In addition, Edward Norton supports several environmental protection groups such as Sea Shepherd , Save the Elephants , Greenpeace , the Earthday Network , WildAid, the Solar Neighbors Program , the African Wildlife Foundation, Global Green, the Wilderness Society, Earth Justice and the Avoided Deforestation Partners. In 2010 he was appointed UN Ambassador for Biodiversity by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon . His mother worked as a teacher. She died in 1997 of a brain tumor.

During his history studies at Yale , which he graduated with a bachelor's degree, Norton took several theater courses. His breakthrough in the film business came in 1996 with the film Twilight , in which he takes on the psychologically complex role of a young accused in a murder case . For this first appearance outside the theater, he has already received numerous nominations and won a Golden Globe for best supporting actor. His fee for the film was $ 50,000. He received several nominations for his role as a reformed neo-Nazi in American History X , including one for an Oscar for best actor.

His roles are mostly characterized by great complexity. At his direction - debut is a love triangle between a Catholic priest (Norton), a rabbi and her childhood friend ( Keeping the Faith , 2000). In 2019, Motherless Brooklyn was his second directorial work, with which he was also responsible for the first time as a screenwriter. The detective film is based on a novel by Jonathan Lethem and Norton also starred.

Norton not only works as an actor, he trained as a film editor and cameraman and edited the film Down in the Valley under the name Edward Harrison , in which he also played. He also directed the camera in the TV documentary The Yunnan Great Rivers Expedition by his younger brother Jim Norton .

During his two-year love affair with Courtney Love , Norton performed two gigs in her band Hole as a guitarist. He was engaged to the actress Salma Hayek , in whose project Frida he not only took on a role, but also edited the script. As of March 2011, he was engaged to the producer Shauna Robertson . They have been married since April 2013. In March 2013, their first child, a son, was born. In addition to his mother tongue, he also speaks Spanish and some Japanese.

Norton's German voice actor is currently Andreas Fröhlich . In the films American History X , Rounders and The Italian Job , however, he was voiced by Dietmar Wunder . Volker Hanisch lent Norton his voice in the theatrical versions of The Illusionist and The Colorful Veil , but he was later replaced by Fröhlich for the DVD version.
