action

The parole officer Jack Mabry, the opinion on applicants for early release created controls purposefully towards his retirement. His succession is regulated; there are only a few ongoing cases that Jack wants to work through. Among them is Gerald Creeson, called Stone, who is in prison for arson . The arson was an offense under cover after his cousin murdered his grandparents. Stone is aggressive from the start, apparently making little effort to pretend he is ready to be released, but purposefully sprinkles one or two clues into the meetings with Jack. Stone's wife Lucetta takes over the other part outside of the prison by getting on Jack, calling him, speaking to him personally before work, inviting him to dinner and finally seducing him.

Meanwhile, Stone delves into the study of a religious theory in prison that deals with sounds that displace the general confusion that Stone suffers from in prison, and are interpreted as God's tuning fork .

Stone warns Jack that his tales would "put a few pictures in his head" that would keep him awake at night. In part, Stone becomes very personal and in turn sheds light on Jack's life, who has thought himself happily married for 43 years. When Jack drives home that evening to make himself comfortable with his wife, he hears a Christian broadcast on the radio about predestination . Thereupon Jack Stone tells about the arson for which he was convicted the next day. According to Stone's account, his cousin Teach had an argument with Stone's grandparents and eventually killed them. To set the house on fire afterwards was Teach's idea. After evaluating days of meetings with Stone, Jack is convinced that he is in favor of early release. But he also secretly does this to end Lucetta's stalking.

It has not escaped Stone that his wife started an affair with Jack, and as soon as he is released from prison, Jack's house burns. While Jack's wife blames a defective electrical cord, Jack firmly believes that it was Stone's act of revenge.

background

production

The film was directed by John Curran and the screenplay was written by Angus MacLachlan . Originally the script was written as a play and also presented once as a staged reading. In 2005, however, MacLachlan changed the play to a script in order to be able to release the film in 2010. The film was supervised by Mimran Schur Pictures, with the help of film producer Holly Wiersma. Stone marks the debut of Mimran Schur Pictures, founded in 2010 by private investor David Mimram and Jordan Schur, longtime music director and former president of Geffen Records. The production company Stone Productions was also involved in the film.

Filming began in Michigan on May 18, 2009 . The prison scenes were filmed in the southern Michigan Correctional Facility in Blackman Township. Ypsilanti provided the Emmanuel Lutheran Church for filming for two days . The funeral service as well as some outdoor scenes were filmed at the church and the locals served as extras. Mast Road in Texas was closed for several weeks while the farmhouse scenes were being filmed at the historic Mast Farmhouse; at the end of the shoot the house was burned down.

Filming was interrupted on June 5, 2009 when an intoxicated woman posed as a fan of De Niros, circumvented security and harassed him. She was arrested and taken to a local hospital.

Reviews

The online portal Treffpunkt Critique rated: "Stone [has] with a drama that is too babbling, with too few characters whose fate is moving, and with too superimposed purification, gambled away what the premise actually arouses: the interest of the audience." There are a few reasons to want to like Stone. But in the end no one manages to get over everything else that the film entails. "

Also film-rezensionen.de ruled similarly: "Some movies you get the feeling that the budget was used alone to to draw well-known actor on land and the producers of those advertising-driving forces secretly to hope with the final product still somehow Profit to make. ”“ Stone proves once again that a star ensemble alone is not enough to cover up a poorly worked out script. The shot backfired here [obviously]. "
