John Curran (director)

John Curran (born September 11, 1960 in New York City ) is an American director and screenwriter .

Life

John Curran studied at Syracuse University with a major in illustration / design and graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He then worked as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer and later as an art director in New York.

In 1986 he moved to Sydney, Australia, and together with five other filmmakers founded a production company for music videos, commercials and short films. Two years later he made his first feature film, Praise . The film has won several awards, including the International Critics' Award of the Toronto International Film Festival .

In 2004 he directed the drama We don't live here anymore . Two years later, the literary film adaptation of The Colorful Veil followed with Edward Norton , Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber in the lead roles. The film Stone , released in 2010, was received ambiguously by critics and was only released direct-to-DVD in Germany .

In 2013 he filmed Robyn Davidson's memoir Tracks with Mia Wasikowska in the lead role.
