Traces (original title: Tracks , reference title: traces - leave everything behind you ) is an Australian fictional film from 2013 about the true story of Robyn Davidson , who alone crossed 2,700 kilometers of the Australian desert landscape on foot in 1977.

action

Traces tells the true story of Robyn Davidson , who moved from the city of Brisbane to the small town of Alice Springs in the middle of the desert in 1975 at the age of 24 , in order to hike from there to the Australian west coast. At first, she lacks the financial means for equipment and food. She works for a camel dealer for several months to get to know the animals better and to train them. However, this only takes advantage of them. When she runs out of money, Robyn makes a deal with National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan . Against her gut feeling, she allows him to visit her on her trip and photograph her for a story in the magazine. After two years of preparation, full of ups and downs, she sets out and embarks on a 2700-kilometer self-discovery trip, accompanied by just one dog and four camels . During her nine-month trip, during which she almost died of thirst and was threatened by wild camels , Robyn learns to better understand Aboriginal culture . In addition, Robyn and Rick get closer. The film closes with a quote from Robyn Davidson: "Camel journeys don't start or end, they just change shape."

background

The story of Robyn Davidson's trip through the Australian desert appeared as the cover story of National Geographic in 1978 . A little later, Robyn Davidson wrote her bestselling novel Traces .

The story should be filmed beforehand. In 1993 Julia Roberts was slated for the role, as was Nicole Kidman , who like Mia Wasikowska is also Australian.

Awards

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August 2013 , where John Curran was nominated for the Golden Lion . The film was also the crowd favorite at the 2013 Toronto and London Festivals.

The film received the “Predicate Valuable” award from the German Film and Media Assessment (FBW).

criticism

“Fascinating self-discovery trip based on true events through a majestic nature, which here takes on its own leading role. Actress Mia Wasikowska is brilliant in her role as the fragile but strong-willed main character. "
