In New England living, married university professor Jack Linden and Hank Evans are friends. Evans dreams of a career as a writer. The two couples spend a lot of time together. Edith Evans feels neglected and starts an affair with Jack. Terry cheats on him with Hank.
Reviews
Claudia Puig wrote in USA Today on August 12, 2004 that the film was a "revelation". It is one of the few American films that is not afraid of exploring emotional cruelty. Puig praised the "strong performances" of the four main actors, especially those of Laura Dern.
Awards
Larry Gross received the 2004 Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award from the Sundance Film Festival ; John Curran was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. Curran was also nominated for an award at the Deauville Film Festival that same year . Laura Dern received the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress. Maryse Alberti received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award in 2005 .

The film was shot in Vancouver . Production costs were estimated at $ 3 million. The world premiere took place on January 20, 2004 at the Sundance Film Festival , followed by numerous screenings at other film festivals.
