Peter Krause (born August 12, 1965 in Alexandria , Minnesota ) is an American actor .

In his youth, Krause, the son of a teacher couple, was a promising athlete who had to end this career after an accident while pole vaulting in high school. He later moved to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter and became interested in the theater while studying English literature . He decided to become an actor and after graduation went to New York University to take part in the "Master of Fine Arts" program.

He took on guest roles in television series such as Seinfeld , Beverly Hills, 90210 and Cybill and minor roles in lesser-known TV series and films in the early 1990s . In 1998, he landed a small role in the film The Truman Show alongside Jim Carrey .

While working as a barman, he met the screenwriter Aaron Sorkin . From 1998 to 2000 Krause played the character Casey McCall in the ABC comedy Sports Night , which was developed by his friend Sorkin. Although the series received critical acclaim, it failed to attract a loyal fan base and was therefore canceled after two seasons.

Krause became internationally known for his role as Nate Fisher in the successful HBO series Six Feet Under , which started in the USA in 2001 and helped Krause achieve a breakthrough. Krause received numerous awards and nominations for his portrayal of the undertaker Nate. The series ended in the US in 2005 with the fifth season.

Krause has a son born in 2001 from a previous relationship. He has been in a relationship with fellow actress Lauren Graham since 2010 .
