Production history

development

The script for the first episode, written by Emmy-nominated series creator Craig Wright, took its first steps into production in July 2006 when ABC bought the rights. The project was developed at Berlanti Television and Greg Berlanti stepped in as a co-producer of Wright. In January 2007 the project was christened "Dirty Sexy Money" and a first episode was officially ordered by ABC. Employees were searched in the same month that Emmy-nominated director Peter Horton agreed to direct the series' first episode. Before ABC's official screening on May 11, 2007, the series finally received early acceptance for 13 episodes.

Casting

Casting for the central roles in the series began in February 2007. Seth Gabel was the first actor to be cast on the series. He got the role of Jeremy Darling. The producers found their main actor in Peter Krause, for whom the role of Nick George was originally written. After initially turning down the role, he finally decided on the role after being convinced by Craig Wright, the creator of the series, with whom he had already worked on Six Feet Under. Finally, Glenn Fitzgerald, Jill Clayburgh, Natalie Zea, Samaire Armstrong, Zoe McLellan and William Baldwin were also cast. Golden Globe winner Donald Sutherland rounds off the ensemble.

Charisma

Filming for the first season of the series began on July 17, 2007, while the series premiered on September 26 on the American television channel ABC and was broadcast there every Wednesday at 10:00 p.m. Due to the writers' strike that began in November 2007, which prematurely interrupted production of the series, the series was replaced by Cashmere Mafia in January 2008.

For Germany, the pay-TV channel FOX Channel has rights to the series. The FOX Channel has aired the series since October 30, 2008. In Austria, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation presented the series for ORF 1's program in the 2008/09 season. The free TV broadcast in Germany will take place from March 24, 2011 every Thursday at 8:15 p.m. on ZDFneo .

Writers strike

On November 16, 2007, ABC ordered a full season of the series. A few weeks earlier, the Hollywood writers' strike began in 2007 and made Dirty Sexy Money the first series to be ordered for a full season after the strike began. A total of 13 episodes were completed, of which, however, only 10 episodes were broadcast in the 2007 TV season. On February 11, 2008, ABC announced that it had ordered a second season of the series for the fall 2008 program, but would not broadcast any more episodes in the 2007/2008 TV season. The three episodes of the first season that were not broadcast would be revised again because the authors had rushed the episodes through the production in the face of the impending strike and would like to give the episodes the necessary fine-tuning.

Behind the scenes changes in Season 2

For the second season of the series, it was decided to make numerous changes behind the scenes to hit the right note and attract more viewers to the show, as the series struggled with viewer losses towards the end of the first season. Initially, Daniel Cerone ( Dexter ) was hired as a showrunner , which should add more tension to the series. For reasons unknown, the decision was made to make Samaire Armstrong, who starred in the first season, a recurring guest star instead and hired Lucy Liu as the new lead actress. In June, Daniel Cerone finally resigned as showrunner because the producers of the series and the broadcaster found him incompatible with the series. The first two episodes of him had not been well received by audiences at test screenings and were labeled too gloomy. Then Jon Harmon Feldman ( Tru Calling ) took over the post of showrunner. It was decided not to broadcast the last three episodes of the first season, which were written and produced in a hurry shortly before the writers' strike. It was also decided to restructure and redevelop the first episodes of the second season that had already been filmed.

perception

Dirty Sexy Money was able to inspire American critics even before the start of the series and received good reviews. Entertainment Weekly called the series "one of the most interesting shows of the fall [2007]". The New York Times wrote, "Everyone is having too much fun, this will involve the viewer."

Audience ratings

On September 26, 2007, the series started with disappointing but passable audience numbers. In the weeks that followed, the series lost viewers, but was then able to keep the number of its viewers fairly stable and at the same time keep the majority of the viewers of the supporting program.
