action
After the unexpected death of father William Walker at a family birthday party, the Walker family is about to start over. The family is confronted with the real life of the head of the family. In addition to a perfect life as a husband and company boss, he also led a double life that is gradually being revealed.
Kitty Walker's successful career as a radio announcer leads her to a job offer with a television station in Los Angeles, but her boyfriend plans to stay in New York, so she returns to the family's lap alone. Down-to-earth Thomas 'Tommy' Walker teams up with older sister Sarah to whip up the family business, which is in dire financial straits. Sarah must also try to reconcile business and family. The second youngest of the siblings, attorney Kevin Walker, is gay and looking for true love. The youngest offspring of the Walkers, Justin joined the army after September 11th and went to the war in Afghanistan. On his return he has to struggle with depression and drug addiction.
The Walker siblings are mainly supported by their mother Nora Walker. After the death of her husband, the matriarch is completely on her own. She is now trying to bring all five children back together as one family. At her side is her brother Saul Holden, who works as an accountant in the family business and was thus able to discover William's secrets.
Right at the start of the series, it turns out that William Walker had an affair with former actress Holly Harper. From this relationship comes an illegitimate daughter, Rebecca Harper, who causes all sorts of problems by showing up in the middle of the first season.

In the unaired pilot episode , Iva (later Nora) Walker was played by Betty Buckley . Since she was badly received by the audience at test screenings, the role was changed. Sally Field took on the role of Nora Walker, as she better portrays the motherly character. Furthermore, the character of Kevin was changed in the pilot episode, who was then still played under the name Bryan by Jonathan LaPaglia .
