Marion Ross (* 25. October 1928 in Albert Lea , Minnesota as Marian Ross ) is an American actress .

Life

Ross grew up in Albert Lea, Waconia and Wilmar , Minnesota. She has an older sister Alicia and a younger brother Gordon. Ross changed her first name from Marian to Marion , as she considered it more advantageous for her acting career. After finishing her sophomore year of high school, she went to Minneapolis to work as an au pair . There she took acting classes at the MacPhail Center for the Arts and attended Southwest High School. A year later, her family moved to San Diego , California .

Ross enrolled at San Diego State College and was considered the college's best actress. After graduating in 1950, she played in La Jolla theater. The director there was so convinced of her acting talent that he recommended her to start a career on the big screen. In 1951, Ross married Freeman Meskiman. The marriage resulted in two children, the actor Jim Meskimen (* 1959) and the director and screenwriter Ellen Plummer . In 1969 the marriage ended in divorce. From the late 1980s until his death, she was in a relationship with the actor Paul Michael (1926-2011). Marion Ross now lives in Los Angeles .

Career

Her debut was in 1953 Ross in the film The piquant years of a woman ( Forever Female ) on the side of Ginger Rogers . Small roles in The Glenn Miller Story , Sabrina (both 1954) and Company Petticoat (1959) followed. Her television career began in 1953, where she starred in the series Life With Father for two years . She then appeared in The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show , The Boss and Cobra Take Over, among others. For a long time, Ross's career was largely limited to supporting roles, often portraying friendly maids and nurses, and occasionally the leading actress' best friend.

Ross first became known to a wide audience through the hit television series Happy Days , where she played the role of family mother Marion Cunningham from 1974 to 1984 . After the unexpected success of Happy Days , Ross appeared in numerous other television productions. In the early 1990s, she starred in the short-lived television series Brooklyn Bridge , which earned her an Emmy Award nomination . Her later roles include grandmother Lorelai 'Trix' Gilmore in six episodes of Gilmore Girls and grandmother Bernice Forman in four episodes of The Wild Seventies . She was also seen on the Drew Carey Show as Carey's mother. In the original English version of the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants , she lent her voice to Grandmother SquarePants. Even in the 2010s, Ross, who was now over 80, could mostly be seen in several film and television productions each year.

Awards

Marion Ross was nominated five times for an Emmy , also for her supporting role in the comedy Years of Tenderness - The Story Continues for the Golden Globe Award . She has received a Q Award twice. She has had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since July 12, 2001 .
