Jackie Ivers, a nurse, lives in Los Angeles. She goes to a provincial town to visit her terminally ill father Steve. On the way she runs into a man who she later finds unharmed in the city. She also finds her father completely healthy, but his behavior irritates her because he has changed a lot.
A police officer tells Jackie to return to Los Angeles.
Jackie meets Dr. Jeff Chapman, who she used to be with. She and Chapman discover that aliens hiding in a nearby lake kidnap, murder, and replace local residents with doppelgangers. Jackie is kidnapped too, but she manages to escape.
