The volume of the mergers & acquisitions announced worldwide in 1998 was around 2.5 trillion US dollars, an increase of 55 percent compared to the previous year. Around 20,670 transactions with a total volume of 2.1 trillion US dollars were completed. The combination of Exxon and Mobil to form ExxonMobil , announced on November 27, was the front runner with an announced volume of US $ 86 billion.
