  • 1807 : The city of Leiden is badly damaged by the explosion of a ship carrying gunpowder . 151 people are killed, an estimated 2,000 are injured and around 220 houses are destroyed.

  • 1920 : The French passenger steamer Afrique is on the French coast when the generators fail in a storm and the steamer is unable to maneuver and is thrown onto a reef, where it leaks and sinks. Of the 609 passengers and crew members, only 34 survive. The accident is considered one of the greatest disasters in the history of French steam shipping .
  • 1945 : An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 in the Mikawa Bay , Japan, resulting in about 1,900 deaths.
  • 2006 : At least 362 Muslim pilgrims die in a mass panic during the Hajj in Mena near Mecca and more than 250 are injured.

  • 2010 : According to the government, 200,000 people are believed to be killed in an earthquake with a magnitude M W = 7.0 with the epicenter near Port-au-Prince , the capital of the Caribbean island state of Haiti . 250,000 more people are injured and 1.5 million are left homeless. The country's presidential palace also collapses.
