Life
After two years of military service and three years of studying English at Oxford University , Hill initially earned his living as a teacher. From his debut on, his best-known heroes of the novel, Andrew Dalziel (pronounced diːˈɛl ) and Peter Pascoe, Superintendent and Chief Inspector of the Yorkshire Police, investigate. The second novel in the series was published the following year, another crime thriller and the first of eight thrillers that he published under the pseudonym Patrick Ruell (after his wife Patricia Ruell ). Other pseudonyms from this period were Dick Morland and Charles Underhill . Reginald Hill worked in two ways for ten years before he gave up teaching in 1980 and became a full-time writer . In addition to the police crime stories , he also wrote a detective series about Joe Sixsmith from Luton between 1993 and 2008, as well as a number of other novels and short stories .
Reginald Hill, who suffered from a brain tumor , died in January 2012 at the age of 75.
