Prix du Roman d'Aventures
The Prix du Roman d'Aventures ( German : "Adventure Novel Prize" ) is a French literary prize that is awarded each year by the Le Masque series to a French or foreign crime novel . The award was initiated in 1930 by Albert Pigasse , head of the crime fiction book series published by the Parisian publisher Librairie des Champs-Elysées. This makes the crime prize older than the popular Prix du Quai des Orfèvres or the more renowned Grand prix de littérature policière . Pigasse promoted the recognition of the Anglo-American detective novel in France, which would later also inspire French detective writers, through the first French publications of works such as Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot stories.
In the past, the award was given to an unpublished manuscript in French that had to be sent to the Librairie des Champs-Elysées by March 31st each year. The winner was announced by a jury almost a month and a half later, on May 15, which included such well-known personalities as writers and journalists Pierre Benoit (1886–1962), Gus Bofa (1883–1968), Francis Carco (1886–1958) ), Joseph Kessel (1898–1979) or Pierre Mac Orlan (1882–1970). The winner received 10,000 francs while his novel was published by the Librairie des Champs-Elysées and appeared in the Le Masque series.
From the end of the 1960s, the Prix du Roman d'Aventures became a publisher's prize, and from the 1980s on, foreign crime writers such as Ruth Rendell (1984), Peter Lovesey (1987), Patricia Cornwell (1992) and Val McDermid (1998) were also honored .
