Joseph Kessel (born February 10, 1898 in Entre Ríos , Argentina , † July 23, 1979 in Avernes , Val-d'Oise ) was a French journalist , adventurer and novelist .

Live and act

Origin and childhood

Joseph Kessel came from Russian-Jewish parents. His younger brother Lazare Kessel (1899-1920) was the biological father of the writer Maurice Druon (1918-2009). Kessel's father, a doctor, had emigrated from Russia and was trying to start a new life in Argentina. However, he later returned to Russia and finally lived in France from 1908. Kessel experienced an eventful youth in the pampas, attended schools in Montlhéry , Orenburg (Ural), Nice and finally in Paris ( Lycée Louis-le-Grand ).

Military activity in the world wars

In 1916 he volunteered for the French Air Force, which was under construction, and was awarded the Military Medal and the War Cross 1914-18 . His book L'Equipage ( The Team , 1923) reflects the experiences at the front and is one of the first aviation novels. After France surrendered in 1940, he joined the Resistance .

Journalistic activity

His career began as a foreign correspondent . Kessel quickly earned the reputation of an adventurer who traveled almost the entire world. In his reports , but also in novels , he often dealt with aviation in addition to war topics. In 1926 he traveled to Palestine for the French daily Paris-Soir . He later reported as a journalist on the founding of Israel and the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem .

death

Kessel died on July 23, 1979 in Avernes (Val-d'Oise) and was buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris .

Kessel's literature

His preferred genre is the adventure novel , the most important representative of which is the novel about Henri de Monfreid Fortune Carrée . Despite the success of his books, Kessel never quite managed to gain recognition as a writer. His novels were too close to the entertainment literature, the travel reports to the report. When he was accepted into the Académie française in 1962, literary critics wrote that Kessel was “the first reporter under the dome of the immortals”. Many of his works have been filmed, such as B. Belle de Jour - Beauty of the day by Luis Buñuel and The stroller of Sans-Souci by Jacques Rouffio . Kessel's most successful novel is Le Lion ( Patricia and the Lion ) from 1958, which has been published as a classic children's book ever since. The film Sirocco - Between Cairo and Damascus is based on the historical circumstances of the Great Syrian Revolution in 1925.
