Henri Verneuil
Henri Verneuil (born: Achod Malakian ; born October 15, 1920 in Rodosto , today Tekirdağ, Turkey ; † January 11, 2002 in Bagnolet , Seine-Saint-Denis , France ) was a French director , screenwriter and film producer of Armenian origin who For decades he was one of the most commercially successful French directors.
Life
Verneuil's family had emigrated to France from their homeland after the Armenian genocide . He took an early interest in cinema and after successfully studying engineering at Arts et Métiers in Aix-en-Provence, he came to film with the help of the actor Fernandel in the late 1940s and made his first films such as Les nouveaux misérables (1949) , On demande un bandit (1950) and Maldonne (1950).
The 1960s marked the height of his work, he made exceptional, both artistically and commercially successful films such as A Monkey in Winter (1962), Silent As The Night (1963), The 25th Hour (1967), The Hell of San Sebastian (1968) and The Sicilian Clan (1969). His films The Coup (1971), The Snake (1973), Fear Over the City (1975), The Body of My Enemy (1976), I Like Icarus (1979) and The Glorious (1984) were made in the 1970s and 1980s .
Verneuil often worked with a regular crew in front of and behind the camera during his career. In addition to long-time friend and actor Fernandel, this included Jean Gabin and especially Jean-Paul Belmondo , with whom he worked regularly for more than two decades. For Verneuil, the biggest stars of French film have repeatedly appeared in front of the camera, including Alain Delon , Lino Ventura , Yves Montand , Bernard Blier , Philippe Noiret , Jeanne Moreau , Louis de Funes and Patrick Dewaere .
Verneuil was nominated for an Oscar for best screenplay in 1956 and for César in 1980 . In 1996 Verneuil received the Honorary César for his life's work. In 1999 Verneuil was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
From the mid-1980s Verneuil was hardly active as a director. His last two films Mayrig - Heimat in der Fremde and Mayrig - 588 rue paradis were autobiographical and less commercially oriented than most of his other films. They tell of the genocide of family members, of the flight and his growing up abroad.
His daughter Gaya Verneuil (* 1989) is an actress and his son Sevan Malakian (* 1985), both from his second marriage to Véronique Sedro, is a rapper.
