action

The hotelier Albert Quentin simply cannot forget his time as a marine in the French expeditionary force in China. Every day he dreams through the old adventures in the intoxication of alcohol. When his hometown Tigreville ( Villerville ) is bombed by the Allies, he promises his wife never to drink again if he survives . Fifteen years later, in Fouquet, one of his hotel guests who is a copywriter and alcoholic, he finds a likeable crony who understands him. They spend a lot of time together, which ultimately culminates in a joint binge. After Albert and Fouquet leave the bar, where they were previously noticed by their naughty behavior, Fouquet suggests in the middle of the night to pay his 10-year-old daughter a visit at the boarding school, as she does not feel comfortable there. The manager opens the door, but puts her off for the next day about her condition and sends her away. Never tired, they organize a fireworks display on the beach at the end, during which all the residents of the town wake up and then sleep off their intoxication in a destroyed bunker on the beach.

The next morning they both go to the train station, ready to leave. Albert visits his late father in the cemetery every year around this time - Fouquet takes his daughter Marie home to Paris. On the train, Albert tells little Marie a story from his time in China. Countless wild young orphaned monkeys were then collected by the Chinese, brought over the winter and released again the following spring.

background

The scene in which Fouquet performs his daring bullfighting movements in the middle of a busy street was suggested by Belmondo himself. In a similar situation he had observed the author Antoine Blondin, whose novel was filmed here, in Paris .

Both the production company and the French film supervisory authority initially had concerns about showing a film about two drunk men to the public, but eventually gave in. The censorship was also bothered by the good visibility of the liquor brands.

The film was shot in the winter of 1962 in several municipalities in the Calvados department (Normandy).

criticism

"The largely turbulent, but contemplative-poetic film thrives on a number of splendid ideas and the high acting skills of its actors."

- Lexicon of International Films
