The Calvados department [ kalvadoːs ] is the French department of 14 with the ordinal number It is located in the north of the country in the region Normandy and after the Plateau du Calvados riffs mentioned, which are upstream in the area of the coast, named.

geography

The department is bordered by the Seine-Maritime department to the northeast (opposite the Seine Delta), the Eure department to the east, the Orne department to the south and the Manche department to the west . In the north of Calvados lies the English Channel . The Bessin is a landscape in the Bayeux area .

history

The department was formed during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790 from part of the previously existing province of Normandy . It was divided into six districts (French: district ), the forerunners of the arrondissements . The districts were Bayeux , Caen , Falaise , Lisieux , Pont-l'Évêque and Vire . The department and the districts were divided into 71 cantons and in 1791 had 391,352 inhabitants. The capital was already Caen at that time.

The arrondissements were established on February 17, 1800. All six districts were made into arrondissements, with the cantons being redesigned.

On September 10, 1926, the arrondissements of Falaise (at Caen) and Pont-l'Évêque (at Lisieux) were dissolved.

In 1956, the department was assigned to the then newly founded region of Basse-Normandie , which was merged with Haute-Normandie in 2016 .
