history
The department was formed during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790 from part of the previously existing province of Normandy . It was divided into six districts (French: district ), the forerunners of the arrondissements . The districts were Bayeux , Caen , Falaise , Lisieux , Pont-l'Évêque and Vire . The department and the districts were divided into 71 cantons and in 1791 had 391,352 inhabitants. The capital was already Caen at that time.
The arrondissements were established on February 17, 1800. All six districts were made into arrondissements, with the cantons being redesigned.
On September 10, 1926, the arrondissements of Falaise (at Caen) and Pont-l'Évêque (at Lisieux) were dissolved.
In 1956, the department was assigned to the then newly founded region of Basse-Normandie , which was merged with Haute-Normandie in 2016 .
