The Marne [ maʀn ] department is the French department with serial number 51. It is located in the north-east of the country in the Grand Est region and was named after the Marne river . The department has 568,895 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The capital is Châlons-en-Champagne , the most culturally important city is Reims .

The department is bordered by the Ardennes department to the north, the Meuse department to the east, the Haute-Marne department to the southeast, the Aube department to the south, the Seine-et-Marne department to the southwest and the Aisne department to the northwest .
The Champagne region is located in the Marne department and is world famous for the champagne produced there .

history
The Marne department was formed on March 4, 1790 from parts of the Champagne province . It originally consisted of the six districts of Châlons-sur-Marne , Épernay , Reims , Sainte-Menehould , Sézanne and Vitry-le-François . In 1800, the six districts became the five arrondissements Châlons-sur-Marne, Épernay, Reims, Sainte-Menehould and Vitry-le-François. From 1926 to 1940 the arrondissement of Sainte-Menehould was dissolved.
From 1960 to 2015 it was part of the Champagne-Ardenne region that became part of the Grand Est region in 2016 .
