Location of the Haute-Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes |
The Haute-Loire [ otlwaːʀ ] is the French department with the atomic number 43. It is in the center of the country in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes and after the upper reaches of the Loire named.
geography
The Haute-Loire is bordered to the north by the departments of Puy-de-Dôme and Loire , to the east and southeast of the Ardèche , in the southwest of the Lozère region Occitania and the west by the Cantal .
The department is located in the eastern part of the Massif Central and is predominantly part of the Velay landscape . In the north, the Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park extends far into the Puy-de-Dôme department . The Allier river runs through the west of the department in a northerly direction. The eponymous Loire reaches the département from the south in its upper reaches, passes the centrally located capital Le Puy-en-Velay and then flows northeastwards until it merges into the Loire department in Aurec-sur-Loire .
history
The department was formed during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790 from parts of the provinces of Auvergne and Languedoc (the county of Velay, under the Bishop of Le Puy ). It was divided into three districts ( districts ), the forerunners of the arrondissements . The districts were Brioude, Le Puy and Yssingeaux. The department and the districts were divided into 32 cantons and had (1791) around 200,000 (?) Inhabitants. The capital was already Le Puy at that time.
The arrondissements of Brioude , Le Puy and Yssingeaux , which are identical with the districts , were established on February 17, 1800. From September 10, 1926 to June 1, 1942, the Arrondissement Yssingeaux was dissolved and assigned to the Arrondissement Le Puy.
From 1960 to 2015 it was part of the Auvergne region , which in 2016 became part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
