The Aude [ oːd ] department is the French department with serial number 11. It is located in the south of the country in the Occitania region and was named after the Aude river .

geography

The Aude department is located on the western Mediterranean coast north of the Pyrenees . It borders the Haute-Garonne department to the north-west, the Tarn department to the north, the Hérault department to the north-east, the Mediterranean Sea to the east, the Pyrénées-Orientales department to the south and the Ariège department to the west .

The south of the department extends into the mountains of the Corbières , the south-west into the foothills of the Pyrenees, the north-west lies in the Lauragais landscape , the north in the Minervois . The extreme north in the transition to the Tarn department lies in the Montagne Noire , the southernmost foothills of the Massif Central . The east and most of the coastal area form the Regional Nature Park Narbonnaise en Méditerranée . The southern coastal area is characterized by a lagoon landscape , the largest of which are the Étang de Bages et de Sigean and the Étang de Leucate .

Carcassonne, the capital of the department , as seen from the Aude

The eponymous Aude first drains the west of the department northwards, turns to the east in the capital Carcassonne , then flows through the north of the department and flows into the Mediterranean on the border with the Hérault department. Also in the north - partly parallel to the Aude - runs the Canal du Midi , which connects Toulouse with the Mediterranean and reaches it in the Hérault department. The Canal de la Robine , which crosses the most populous city of Narbonne and reaches the Mediterranean in Port-la-Nouvelle between the Étang de l'Ayrolle and the Étang de Bages et de Sigean , connects to the southeast via the Canal de Jonction and the Aude .

history

The department was formed on March 4, 1790 from part of the Languedoc province .

From 1960 to 2015 it belonged to the Languedoc-Roussillon region , which in 2016 became part of the Occitania region.
