The Haute-Vienne department [ otvjɛn ] is the French department with the atomic number 87. It is in the center of the country in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine and is named after the river Vienne named.

geography

The Haute-Vienne department is bordered to the north by the departments of Vienne and Indre , on the east by the Creuse , in the southeast on the Correze , in the southwest on the Dordogne and in the west to the Charente .

The department is located in the northwestern foothills of the Massif Central , the southeast protrudes into the Plateau de Millevaches . The most important river is the eponymous Vienne , which rises in the Plateau de Millevaches, reaches the department from the southeast, then turns west, flows through the centrally located capital Limoges and leaves the department in the second largest city of Saint-Junien . The Gartempe runs through the north of the department . The southwest is part of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park .

The Dolmen du Bois de la Lieue is located in a forest west of Ambazac near Limoges .

history

It was formed on March 4, 1790 from part of the Limousin Province and part of the Marche Province . It also belonged to the Limousin region from 1960 to 2015 , which became part of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region in 2016 .
