The Finistère [ finistɛːʀ ] is the French department of 29 with the ordinal number It is located in the northwest of the country in the region Brittany , and is France's westernmost continental department. Due to its location on the tip of the Breton peninsula , it was given the name Finis Terrae (end of the earth) in Roman times . The Breton name is Penn ar Bed ([ ˌpɛnarˈbeːt ] beginning, top or head of the world). The department is divided into North and South Finistère, the prefectural seats are Quimper in the south and the port city of Brest in the north.
geography
The department extends roughly from Morlaix via Brest to Quimperlé . Long sandy beaches in the south, meanders and small bays in the north, a rugged rocky coast with heather behind in the west characterize the coast of Finistère.
history
The department was formed on March 4, 1790 from the westernmost part of the province of Brittany.
