Audierne ( Breton Gwaien ) is a commune in Cornouaille , in western France in the Finistère department in the Brittany region . 3,692 inhabitants live in an area of ​​18.37 km² (as of January 1, 2017). Audierne is located on a peninsula at the mouth of the Goyen and is a fishing village with a long sandy beach. From the port of the Esquibien district you can take a boat to the Île de Sein .

history

From the beginning of 1939 in Audierne there was an internment camp in a former sardine factory, where originally soldiers of the Republican Spanish Army and the International Brigades were detained. At the beginning of the Second World War, they were followed by non-French suspects who were suspected of being "suspicious", the vast majority of whom were declared Nazi opponents. In a second wave of internment in 1940 a. a. Leonhard Frank , Soma Morgenstern , Jakob Altmaier and Balder Olden . Under dramatic conditions they managed to escape from the advancing Wehrmacht and the Gestapo who followed them.

On January 1, 2016, the Esquibien parish was incorporated.
