Edern is a French commune with 2224 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the west of the Brittany region . It belongs to the Finistère department , the Quimper arrondissement and the Briec canton .
geography
Edern is located in a hilly landscape, partly characterized by bocage , south of the Armorique Regional Nature Park in the Pays Glazik at the foot of the Montagnes Noires (Black Mountains), about 50 kilometers southeast of Brest , about 20 kilometers east of the Atlantic coast , 15 kilometers northeast of Quimper and about 15 kilometers southeast of Châteaulin , between the neighboring communities of Briec in the west, Langolen in the southeast and Gouézec in the north.
history
The village was named after the Breton saint Edern and was first mentioned in a document around 900.
In 1793 Edern received in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government.

The Notre-Dame-de-Lannien chapel was built in the 16th century and the bell tower was added in the 18th century.
The castle de la Boixière belonged to the Hallier family in the 19th century. The castle's ornamental garden was set up in its current form in 1897. The castle and garden are privately owned.
The Saint-Jean-Botlan chapel was built in the 16th century on a former property of the Knights Templar (around 1118 to around 1312). It was entered in the supplementary register of Monuments historiques in 1976 . The chapel is also classified as a Site Classé and its surroundings as a Site Inscrit .
The 15th century Calvary Saint-Maudez is the only vestige of a former monastery. In 1791 he came into community ownership. In 1886 it was sold together with the monastery chapel. The Pietà of the Calvary was brought to the Quimper Museum. Some statues have disappeared, but the crucifix in the middle has been preserved. The Calvary was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques in 1956 ( inscrit MH ).

The D72 runs through the municipality and ends in Briec. At Briec there is an exit on European route 60 ( Nantes - Brest). There are regional train stations in Quimper and Châteaulin . There are regional airports at Quimper and Brest .

- Jean-Edern Hallier (born March 1, 1936 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, † January 12, 1997 in Deauville), was a writer and was buried in the cemetery of Edern.
