The holy Edern von Lannédern (* 9th century , † 10th century in Lannédern ) is an unoccupied saint , who is venerated especially in Brittany . He is said to have worked as a monk and missionary and was buried in the church of Saint-Edern in Lannédern. His feast day is August 26th .

Names

Other names for Edern are Edeyrn , Ouedern , Edrin , Edren , Œgidius . The name Edern refers to different people who are venerated as saints.

Life

Legend has it that Saint Edern von Lannédern was born in the county of Cumberland in north-west England , where he believed to have lived as a monk and hermit . Later he came with his sister Genoveva von Loqueffret to Brittany , where they went ashore at Douarnenez . Genoveva is said to have founded a monastery in Loqueffret , the holy Edern is said to have initially settled in the place named after him Edern as a hermit, where he built a chapel. He later founded a hermitage in Lannédern, where he lived until his death.

Legend and iconography

According to legend, the holy Edern saved the life of a stag that was supposed to be killed during a hunt. The saint is said to have hidden the stag under his monk's robe. Out of gratitude, the stag accompanied the holy Edern until his death. Mostly the holy Edern is shown riding a stag. The scenes of the legend of the saint are depicted on a carved wood relief in the church of Saint-Edern in Lannédern.

Tomb of the Holy Edern

The bones of the saint are venerated in the Saint-Edern church in Lannédern. His grave is made of granite and was created in the 14th century. On the table grave, the saint is depicted as a reclining figure , dressed in a monk's robe and whose head is wrapped in a hood. His hands are folded over his chest, a bag with a book is hanging on his arm, a stag crouches at his feet, on which the dead man's feet rest. The grave slab rests on a high plinth, which is pierced by arcades with three-pass arches and slender columns.
