Cumberland is one of the 39 traditional counties in England . In 1974 Cumberland was combined with Westmorland and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire to form the new county of Cumbria .

Its administrative center was in Carlisle and the county bordered Northumberland and County Durham to the east, Westmorland to the south and Lancashire to the southwest.

Cumberland was administratively different from the rest of the counties, which are divided into hundreds, divided into five wards : Allerdale above Derwent , Allerdale below Derwent , Cumberland, Eskdale and Leath .

The county name is still used today as a geographical name and is used by various organizations and companies such as: B. The Cumberland News , The West Cumberland Times and Star or Cumberland Building Society .

The Duke of Cumberland's title of nobility has been bestowed on younger members of the royal family repeatedly throughout English history.
