Eskdale (Cumbria)
The Eskdale Valley is a glacier- shaped valley in Cumbria , England , which runs in an east-west direction and is a civil parish . Eskdale has a population of 264 (2001).
The Esk River flows through the valley to its estuary at Ravenglass . The valley is one of the few valleys in the Lake District that does not have a larger lake. Some small mountain lakes are on the slopes of the valley.
From Ravenglass to the west, a road leads into the valley and continues east over Hardknott Pass .
The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway runs through the valley between Ravenglass and boat and is the valley's main tourist attraction along with the surrounding mountain ranges.
The Eskdale area was named by the UK government in 2012 after an initial study as one of two possible repositories for high-level radioactive waste in Cumbria. More detailed investigations should determine the suitability of the area from 2013. However, the selection process is highly controversial because of the possible effects such a repository could have on tourism, and the municipalities involved have asked for more time to make their decision on how to proceed with the search.
