Ravenglass is a small coastal town in Cumbria , England . The place is located on the estuary of the Esk , Mite and Irt rivers and has a natural harbor. Ravenglass is the only coastal town in the Lake District National Park.

The place has existed since at least the 2nd century when it was an important naval base for the Romans . The place was the southernmost point of Cumbria's coastal defense, which was an extension of Hadrian's Wall . A road also connected the place with the camps on Hardknott Pass and led on to a camp near what is now Ambleside . The Romans resided in this place for about 300 years. The only remains from Roman times still visible today are the ruins of a bathhouse called Walls Castle . The bathhouse is managed by English Heritage and is part of Hadrian's Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site .

In 1208 Ravenglass was granted market rights by King Johann Ohneland , according to which a market could be held every Saturday. After the royal privilege, there is also an annual fair on August 5th.

Ravenglass is on the Cumbrian Coast Line railway line and is the western end of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway .
