The River Irt is a river in the Lake District , Cumbria , England . The River Irt arises as an outflow of the Wast Water at its western end. The meandering course of the river alternates between a westerly and a south-southwest direction. Between the places Drigg and Ravenglass the river flows in a southerly direction only separated from the sea by a low headland until it flows into the estuary at Ravenglass , which is formed by its course, the River Esk and the River Mite . This estuary then merges into the Irish Sea .
