Cumbria [ ˈkʌmbɹɪə ] is a county in north-west England . It borders the Irish Sea to the west and the Pennines to the east. The neighboring counties are Northumberland , County Durham , North Yorkshire , Lancashire and the so-called Lieutenancy areas of Scotland Dumfries and Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale in Scotland .

history

Cumbria was created in 1974 when the traditional counties of Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness from Lancashire merged. The name "Cumbria" has been used for centuries for this region, which was formerly ruled by the Celts . It comes from the name of the area in the Cumbrian language .

Cumbria is divided into six districts : Allerdale , Barrow-in-Furness , Carlisle , Copeland , Eden and South Lakeland .

Cumbria is home to the Lake District National Park .

There is a district partnership with the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia .

There are several offshore wind farms off the coast: Walney , Ormonde , Barrow and West of Duddon Sands .
