The promenade and salt marshes at Grange-over-Sands

Grange-over-Sands is a small town and a civil parish with 4042 inhabitants (2001) on the Cartmel Peninsula in Cumbria , England . The place is located on the north bank of Morecambe Bay and is therefore exposed to the large tidal range of the bay, which dries up large areas of the coast and thus explains the suffix "Sands". Until 1974 the place was in Lancashire and it is still part of the Duchy of Lancaster today .

The place was a fishing village that became a popular seaside resort after connecting to the Ulverston and Lancaster Railway in 1857.

The mouth of the River Kent in Morecambe Bay was formerly located directly on the town's promenade, but it has shifted further south, creating salt marshes that are now used as sheep meadows . In order to be independent of the tides , an outdoor swimming pool (also called Lido in English-speaking countries ) was built on the shores of Morecambe Bay in 1932 , which was closed in 1993 and protected as a cultural monument (Grade II) in 2011.

The clean, salty air was considered beneficial for tuberculosis sufferers , which is why in 1891 one of the first sanatoriums for the treatment of tuberculosis was established in the village of Meathop a few kilometers east of Grange-over-Sands.
