Lancashire [ ˈlæŋkəʃər ] is a county in north-west England . The name itself comes from Lancaster and shire . The county is bordered by the Irish Sea, Cumbria , North Yorkshire , West Yorkshire , Greater Manchester and Merseyside counties and the county-free areas of Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen .
Before the 1974 territorial reform , the county was bordered by Cumberland , Westmorland , Yorkshire and Cheshire . The area has now been reduced in size to simplify administration. Since April 1, 1974, the area of Furness (the former area of Lancashire north of Morecambe Bay) has been part of the reorganized county of Cumbria , south-east parts went to Greater Manchester , south-west parts became Merseyside . The city of Warrington and the surrounding areas with the villages of Winwick, Croft, Risley and Culcheth were attached to Cheshire. Part of the West Riding of Yorkshire near Clitheroe was annexed to Lancashire. In 1998, Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen county free bodies ( unitary authorities ), but remained nominally for of protocol events, such as for security measures within Lancashire.
Lancashire is divided into several districts . These are Burnley , Chorley , Fylde , Hyndburn , Lancaster , Pendle , Preston , Ribble Valley , Rossendale , South Ribble , West Lancashire and Wyre .
The county's population was estimated at 1,449,300 in 2010.
