Merseyside [ ˈmɜːzɪsaɪd ] is a metropolitan county in England . It was created by local government reform in 1974 and is located in the north of England on the River Mersey . Merseyside is made up of the metropolitan boroughs of Liverpool , Knowsley , Sefton , St Helens and Wirral .
In 1986 the county council was abolished. Since then, the five Metropolitan Boroughs have been independent administrative units. However, Merseyside continues to exist as an administrative entity and is a ceremonial county . Merseyside is bordered by Lancashire , Greater Manchester and Cheshire .
Traditionally, to denote something that is on Merseyside, the preposition "on" is used instead of "in".
