Sefton is a metropolitan borough in metropolitan county Merseyside in England . The administrative seat is the city of Bootle . The borough, which is named after the village of Sefton , also includes the towns of Ainsdale , Aintree , Birkdale , Crosby , Formby , Maghull and Southport . The area borders directly on Liverpool and is characterized, among other things, by the port industry on the River Mersey .
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The county boroughs of Bootle and Southport, the urban districts of Formby and Lutherland and part of the West Lancashire Rural District were merged . These local authorities previously belonged to the county of Lancashire .
In 1986 Sefton became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the county’s superordinate administration. Sefton remained part of Merseyside for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police , fire brigade and public transport.
