Aintree (literally from Old English: a tree ) is a place with 7,126 inhabitants (2006) in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside in the United Kingdom .
The place borders the city of Liverpool . It is known worldwide as the venue for the Grand National horse racing on the Aintree Racecourse and for the motor racing circuit Aintree Circuit .
