The Aintree Circuit is a former motor racing circuit in Aintree , England . The British Grand Prix took place here five times between 1955 and 1962 .
history
Very close to the track, which was first used in 1954, there is also a racecourse where the important Grand National horse obstacle race is held. The track was very fast. At that time, when there were very few well-developed racing facilities, Aintree had the advantage that the grandstands of the racecourse could also be used. So it quickly gained in importance.
The Great Britain Grand Prix was held here for the first time in 1955. Stirling Moss and his Mercedes-Benz team- mate Juan Manuel Fangio fought for the lead for most of the race and Moss crossed the finish line just before Fangio in the second narrowest finish in Formula 1 history. In 1957 the British Grand Prix was held again in Aintree. British racing cars began to be successful and Stirling Moss won with Tony Brooks in a Vanwall . This was the first victory for a British racing car in a championship round. In 1959, Jack Brabham secured victory in a Cooper . In 1961 Wolfgang von Trips won in a Ferrari , in 1962 Jim Clark won the race and the first six places were exclusively British racing cars.
The circuit was then sold and doubts about the future of the circuit ensured that the British Grand Prix would be held at Silverstone and Brands Hatch in the years that followed. Today, the focus in Aintree is again on equestrian sport , in October 1994 a golf course was opened in the infield of the racetrack . A shortened version of the old route is still used today for club sport events.
