The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit is a motorsport racetrack in the South African province of Gauteng and is located between the provincial capital Johannesburg and the state capital Pretoria . The word Kyalami means "my home" in IsiZulu , one of South Africa's eleven official languages.
From 1967 to 1985 , the course was a regular venue for the Grand Prix of South Africa as part of the Formula 1 World Championship before it was temporarily suspended due to political pressure. In the late 1980s, the course was fundamentally rebuilt, with only the passages from the curves Jukskei Sweep to The Esses being kept in a slightly different form and the rest being redesigned. After the end of apartheid , Formula 1 returned to South Africa in the 1992 and 1993 seasons . Between 1983 and 1992 , the South African Grand Prix for motorcycles was held here four times as part of the motorcycle world championship.
Nowadays there are hardly any races on the course, as it is located in a residential area and has strict noise avoidance requirements. Instead, it was partially converted to the Kyalami Office Park , in which small and medium-sized companies have settled.
In 2009 , the Superbike World Championship took place in Kyalami for the first time since 2002 . After another event in 2010 , the contract between the government of Gauteng Province and the Superbike World Championship marketer , which originally ran until 2015, was terminated .
