The TT Circuit Assen is a motorsport racetrack near the Dutch city of Assen , where, among other things, the Dutch TT , the Dutch run for the motorcycle world championship , is held.

history

The first race in Assen was held on public roads in 1925. The route ran through the villages of Borger, Schoonloo and Grolloo over a length of 28.4 km. The winner was Piet van Wijngaarden on a 500 cm³ Norton with an average speed of 91.4 km / h.

In the following year the route was changed. It now led through de Haar, Barteldbocht, Oude Tol, Hooghalen and Laaghalerveen. The course record on this route is held by the Briton Geoff Duke on Gilera with an average speed of 169.7 km / h in 1954 .

Current route

In 1955 a permanent race track with a length of 7705 m replaced the old street circuit. In 2006 the length of the route was reduced to 4555 m due to the elimination of the north curve. The longest straight is 970 m. The corners on the TT Circuit are traditionally slightly elevated. The route offers space for 100,000 spectators.

Due to the high speeds that were regularly reached, especially on the variants of the TT Circuit Assen used in the past, the track is nicknamed "Cathedral of Speed".
