Old Formula 1 route, now used for motorcycle races

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a race track in Montmeló north of Barcelona in Catalonia ( Spain ).

In addition to the Spanish Grand Prix of Formula 1 takes place here since 1996 and every year the Grand Prix of Catalunya for FIM - Motorcycle World Championship instead.

history

With the construction of the track, the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix was to be brought back to Barcelona, where it had been held until 1975 on the Circuit de Montjuïc , a temporary street circuit in the city center.

The Circuit de Catalunya opened in September 1991. That same month, on September 29, 1991, the Spanish Grand Prix took place here for the first time , and the course has remained the venue for this race to this day. The circuit is also a popular test track for the Formula 1 and motorcycle teams. Because of the mild temperatures in winter and spring, the course is particularly suitable for season preparation. During the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, the 100 km team time trial in cycling was held on the course .

The route, which has been slightly rebuilt several times over the years, is now 4.655 km in length. The length of the pit lane is 340.70 m. Typical for this circuit are the long curves, which put a lot of stress on the tires and benefit Formula 1 cars with the best aerodynamics .

Michael Schumacher won his first Formula 1 race for Scuderia Ferrari here in the pouring rain in 1996 . In the spring of 2004, Loris Capirossi on a Ducati Desmosedici GP4 set a speed record for the motorcycle world championship that was only exceeded by 1.9 km / h in 2009 by Dani Pedrosa in Mugello during preseason test drives on the start-finish straight with 347.4 km / h on.

In 2013 the track was renamed Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya due to a sponsorship agreement with the city of Barcelona , the city would like to use the advertising effect of the track and the events.

In 2016 , Spanish Moto2 rider Luis Salom was killed after falling in second free practice at the Catalan Grand Prix . Due to this, the route for motorcycle races will be changed from 2017 . Turn 10 is driven like in Formula 1. After turn 13, a new chicane will be built, a little ahead of the one used in Formula 1. These changes add up to a total length of 4.652 km.
