The Ducati Desmosedici is a racing motorcycle from the Italian manufacturer Ducati in the MotoGP class. The Desmosedici has been given the names GP and then the year according to the respective season since 2003 .

Technical model specifications

Ducati Desmosedici GP3

The machine, which was presented to the public in 2002, made its debut in 2003 , a year after the introduction of the new four-stroke regulations in MotoGP. In order to be competitive in the premier class of motorcycle sport, the classic L2-cylinder concept was for the first time dispensed with in favor of a more easy-turning and therefore more powerful V4-cylinder. However, the designers around Gianluigi Mengoli (technical director Ducati Corse ) remained true to the old Ducati tradition and designed, in simplified terms, a double V2-cylinder engine with 16 desmodromic actuated valves (hence the name, sedici , it. Sixteen) . The cylinders fired in an asymmetrical firing order until 2006, called Twin Pulse by Ducati and later called Big Bang / Long Bang . This should bring advantages in terms of both the drivability of the machine and tire wear.

Ducati Desmosedici GP6

The GP6 from the 2006 season was launched (slightly modified) as a street-legal, limited series. The Desmosedici RR was sold in total 1,500.

Ducati Desmosedici GP7

For the 2007 season , the motorcycle was adapted to the changed regulations. The displacement was reduced from 990 to 800 cm³. At the same time, Ducati switched from the Big Bang or Long Bang to the conventional V4 firing order. The motor is integrated into the chassis as a fully load-bearing element, so that the tubular tubular frame made of chrome-molybdenum steel, which is typical of Ducati, can be very compact and light.

Ducati Desmosedici GP12

The Ducati works team fielded two Ducati Desmosedici GP12s in the 2012 motorcycle world championship . The Ducati customer team Pramac Racing Team and Cardion AB Motoracing each used another machine .

successes

In the 2003 motorcycle world championship , Ducati factory rider Loris Capirossi celebrated his first Grand Prix victory at the Grand Prix of Catalonia on the Circuit de Catalunya with the GP3 . At the end of the season they finished second in the constructors' championship. 2004 was worse than the debut season. Ducati was able to increase the performance of the GP4 by 30 hp over the winter  , but this suffered enormously in drivability and turned the season into a disaster. In 2005 Loris Capirossi won the Grands Prix of Japan (in Motegi ) and Malaysia (in Sepang ) at the Desmosedici GP5 .

In 2006 Capirossi won the Grand Prix of Spain in Jerez , the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic in Brno and again in Japan with the Desmosedici GP6 . Substitute driver Troy Bayliss won the Valencia Grand Prix at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in the season finale ahead of his team mate Loris Capirossi. In the drivers 'championship, Capirossi took third place overall, and Ducati also secured third place in the constructors' championship.

2007 was Casey Stoner with the GP7 with 367 points champion. Team mate Loris Capirossi finished seventh in the drivers' standings with 166 points. Ducati was also able to secure the constructors' world championship this season. In 2008 Casey Stoner was only runner-up behind Valentino Rossi on a Yamaha in the GP8 , despite seven wins and eleven podium places . The team took second place in the constructors' championship.

2009 did not go as well with the Desmosedici GP9 . In the end, there were four wins and a total of nine podium places. In the 2010 season , too, things did not go according to plan for the team. With three wins and a total of ten podium places, they fell short of expectations. Similar to the previous season, the drivers repeatedly had concerns about the feeling of the front wheel. The GP10 was in terms of driveability, as in the year before the Yamaha YZR-M1 inferior.

In 2011 the works drivers Rossi and Nicky Hayden could only take two third places with the GP11 . With 180 world championship points in the constructors' championship, the team dropped to third place behind Honda and Yamaha. 2012 was no better for Ducati. With only two second places, the team finished third in the overall standings with 192 points.

In 2013 , works drivers Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden competed for the Ducati works team. The Pramac Racing team also used a GP13 with Andrea Iannone and Ben Spies . No Ducati rider could achieve a podium. The team finished third again, this time with 155 points.
