Engine of a Ducati 750 SS

The Ducati 750 GT was a motorcycle model from the Italian manufacturer Ducati .

It was introduced in 1970 and was Ducati's first production motorcycle with a V-engine . The small frontal area of their two-cylinder engine with the crankshaft installed transversely to the direction of travel enabled low air resistance . The arrangement with a cylinder lying in the direction of travel and a standing cylinder ensured perfect cooling of the rear cylinder. The tubular steel frame, open at the bottom, integrated the motor and gear housing as a load-bearing element.

A racing version was designed in 1972 for the Imola 200 mile race , which was advertised for 750cc racing motorcycles based on series machines. The prestigious race, in which several other works teams took part with well-known drivers, was won for Ducati with the victory of Paul Smart and second place for Bruno Spaggiari , and at the same time the record was set for the fastest lap. Ducati had already attracted attention before the race because the motorcycles had been transported to Imola in a truck with glass walls. The desired advertising effect occurred and in 1973 Ducati initially produced a small series of 750 SS Imola Replica that could be registered . The vertical stripes on both sides of the tank, which were also shown by later SS models, were a recess in the paintwork through which the fill level of the transparent GRP tank could be read. These tanks were not approved in Germany and had to be replaced by metal tanks.

The subsequent series production of the 750 SS in 1975 was followed by the 900 SS developed from it. Variants of the model series were built until 1986 .
